{"id":313,"date":"2008-01-23T07:57:16","date_gmt":"2008-01-23T13:57:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hunch.net\/?p=313"},"modified":"2008-01-23T07:57:16","modified_gmt":"2008-01-23T13:57:16","slug":"why-workshop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hunch.net\/?p=313","title":{"rendered":"Why Workshop?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I second the <a href=\"http:\/\/icml2008.cs.helsinki.fi\/workshops.shtml\">call for workshops at ICML\/COLT\/UAI<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hunch.net\/?p=50\">Several<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/hunch.net\/?p=86\">times<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/hunch.net\/?p=151\">before<\/a>, details of why and how to run a  workshop have been mentioned.  <\/p>\n<p>There is a simple reason to prefer workshops here: attendance.  The Helsinki colocation has placed workshops <a href=\"http:\/\/icml2008.cs.helsinki.fi\/dates.shtml\">directly between ICML and COLT\/UAI<\/a>, which is optimal for getting attendees from any conference.  In addition, <a href=\"http:\/\/web.engr.oregonstate.edu\/~afern\/icml07\/workshops.html\">last year ICML had relatively few workshops<\/a> and NIPS workshops were overloaded.  In addition to <a href=\"http:\/\/nips.cc\/Conferences\/2007\/Program\/schedule.php?Session=Workshops\">those that happened<\/a> a similar number were rejected.  The overload has strange consequences&#8212;for example, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iro.umontreal.ca\/~lisa\/twiki\/bin\/view.cgi\/Public\/DeepLearningWorkshopNIPS2007\">the best attended workshop<\/a> wasn&#8217;t an official NIPS workshop.
