{"id":2680,"date":"2013-11-09T09:54:08","date_gmt":"2013-11-09T15:54:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hunch.net\/?p=2680"},"modified":"2013-11-09T09:54:08","modified_gmt":"2013-11-09T15:54:08","slug":"graduates-and-postdocs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hunch.net\/?p=2680","title":{"rendered":"Graduates and Postdocs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Several strong graduates are on the job market this year.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/research.microsoft.com\/en-us\/um\/people\/alekha\/\">Alekh Agarwal<\/a> made the <a href=\"http:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/1110.4198\">most scalable public learning algorithm<\/a> as an intern two years ago.  He has a deep and broad understanding of optimization and learning as well as the ability and will to make things happen programming-wise.  I&#8217;ve been privileged to have Alekh visiting me in NY where he will be sorely missed.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cs.berkeley.edu\/~jduchi\/\">John Duchi<\/a> created <a href=\"http:\/\/jmlr.org\/papers\/v12\/duchi11a.html\">Adagrad<\/a> which is a commonly helpful improvement over online gradient descent that is seeing wide adoption, including in <a href=\"https:\/\/hunch.net\/~vw\">Vowpal Wabbit<\/a>.  He has a similarly deep and broad understanding of optimization and learning with significant industry experience at <a href=\"http:\/\/google.com\">Google<\/a>.  Alekh and John have often coauthored together.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cs.cmu.edu\/~sross1\/publications.html\">Stephane Ross<\/a> visited me a year ago over the summer, implementing many new algorithms and working out the first <a href=\"http:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/1305.6646\">scale free online update rule<\/a> which is now the default in Vowpal Wabbit.  Stephane is <em>not<\/em> on the market&#8212;Google robbed the cradle successfully \ud83d\ude42 I&#8217;m sure that he will do great things.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.columbia.edu\/~aec2163\/\">Anna Choromanska<\/a> visited me this summer, where we worked on <a href=\"http:\/\/research.microsoft.com\/en-us\/um\/people\/manik\/events\/xc13\/index.html\">extreme multiclass classification<\/a>.  She is very good at focusing on a problem and grinding it into submission both in theory and in practice&#8212;I can see why she wins awards for her work.  Anna&#8217;s future in research is quite promising.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I also wanted to mention some postdoc openings in machine learning.  <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In New York <a href=\"http:\/\/leon.bottou.org\/\">Leon Bottou<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/research.microsoft.com\/en-us\/people\/mdudik\/\">Miro Dudik<\/a>, and I are <a href=\"http:\/\/research.microsoft.com\/en-us\/jobs\/fulltime\/postdoc.aspx#NYC\">looking for someone<\/a>.  The deadline is <strong>December 13<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>In New England, <a href=\"http:\/\/research.microsoft.com\/en-us\/um\/people\/skakade\/\">Sham Kakade<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/research.microsoft.com\/en-us\/um\/people\/adum\/\">Adam Kalai<\/a> are <a href=\"http:\/\/research.microsoft.com\/en-us\/jobs\/fulltime\/postdoc.aspx#NE\">looking for someone<\/a>.  The deadline is <strong>December 13<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Also in the New York area, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cs.columbia.edu\/~djhsu\/\">Daniel Hsu<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/stat.rutgers.edu\/home\/tzhang\/\">Tong Zhang<\/a> may both be considering a postdoc with no particular deadline.<\/li>\n<li>In England, Peter Flach is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bris.ac.uk\/jobs\/find\/details.html?nPostingTargetID=4642\">looking for two postdocs<\/a> on a health &#038; machine learning project with a deadline of <strong>December 2<\/strong>.
