{"id":1772,"date":"2011-04-18T11:20:28","date_gmt":"2011-04-18T17:20:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hunch.net\/?p=1772"},"modified":"2011-04-18T13:16:34","modified_gmt":"2011-04-18T19:16:34","slug":"a-paper-not-at-snowbird","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hunch.net\/?p=1772","title":{"rendered":"A paper not at Snowbird"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Unfortunately, a scheduling failure meant I missed all of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aistats.org\/\">AIStat<\/a> and most of the <a href=\"http:\/\/snowbird.djvuzone.org\/\">learning workshop<\/a>, otherwise known as Snowbird, when it&#8217;s at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.snowbird.com\/index.html\">Snowbird<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<p>At snowbird, the talk on <a href=\"http:\/\/snowbird.djvuzone.org\/2011\/abstracts\/105.pdf\">Sum-Product<\/a> networks by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cs.washington.edu\/homes\/hoifung\/\">Hoifung Poon<\/a> stood out to me (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cs.washington.edu\/homes\/pedrod\/\">Pedro Domingos<\/a> is a coauthor.).  The basic point was that by appropriately constructing networks based on sums and products, the normalization problem in probabilistic models is eliminated, yielding a highly tractable yet flexible representation+learning algorithm.  As an algorithm, this is noticeably cleaner than deep belief networks with a claim to being an order of magnitude faster and working better on an image completion task.<\/p>\n<p>Snowbird doesn&#8217;t have real papers&#8212;just the abstract above.  I look forward to seeing the paper.
